From an e-correspondent…
In your diary of 9th of March, 2007, you wrote: ’The strategy seems to be: get business going by using catalogues of copyright material, prior to negotiating payment to copyright owners/providers, but post advertising revenue driven by the use of copyright material. That is, artists don’t really feature much in the business plan, but use of their work does.’Well, too true. I’ve been active in business dealing for 27+ years (including global settings) and the expression I hear repeatedly goes like this: "It’s better to ask forgiveness than permission" in project planning, new product introduction, and in some cases, new ventures with other firms. This approach is so off the mark and carries long term (in my view) detrimental effects for all involved.
Typically when I hear this expression actually stated, I leave the room, then ask for a different associate to work with.
This is the equivalent of what, in DGM, we refer to as the no jerk policy. Life is already hard enough, dealing with decent people who have reasonable concerns & engage in a spirit of goodwill. Characters with attitude, without goodwill and, regrettably, malice & ill-will, even deliberate dishonesty, already feature too too too much in Crimson & DGM history.
More shelves, more books…
The centre oil is of Cerne Abbas, c. 1935. The two figures immediately below were made by the Minx in the early years of our marriage. The pair of tiny Wellington boots, on the shelf below & to the right of the figures; and the tiny pair of sandals, to the left of them & on the other side of a photo of Toyah & Beaton Bunnerius Bun; are both bona fide pieces of Toyah footware. from when she was two years old. From the early 1950s to the early 1970s this building was a tea shop, and the Tiny Willcox wore them into premises that, 40 years later, became her home .
19.23 Lunch with artist PJ Crook, Richard Parker Crook & local mutual pals. Most enjoyable. Then to computerizing. Gentling with the Minx ahead – yippee!
